Is Vanicream cruelty-free?
Before we get into whether QuickFX is cruelty-free or not, let’s define a cruelty-free brand.
The literal meaning of cruelty-free is;
“(of a cosmetic or other product) developed without being tested on animals”
So a cruelty-free brand is the one that does not test its finished products on animals, nor do they allow or ask third-party companies to conduct animal testing on their behalf.
A cruelty-free brand also does not sell in countries where animal testing is required by law.
While testing, most animals are killed. According to PETA, more than 100 million animals are killed in US laboratories every year for research purposes
Although there are various alternative ways to check the effectiveness of a product, still many companies conduct animal testing.
To find out, whether Vanicream is a cruelty-free brand, it should meet the following criteria;
- It should not test its products on animals.
- The parent company of the brand should not conduct animal testing.
- Brand should not allow or ask other companies or its suppliers to conduct animal testing on their products.
- It should not sell its products in countries like China where animal testing is required by law.
- The brand should be certified as a cruelty-free brand by any respectable organisation such as PETA or Leaping Bunny.
Vanicream has not provided much information on this topic. They have only stated on their website that;
“Pharmaceutical Specialties Inc. does not test our products on animals.”
This statement only shows that the parent company (Pharmaceutical Specialties Inc.) does not test the products of Vanicream on animals. This only fulfils one criterion.
Many questions still need to be answered such as do they allow their suppliers to conduct animal testing? Do they sell in Mainland China where animal testing is required?
Vanicream was emailed with some of the questions that still needed to be answered. Their response to the email was unclear.
Their response showed that;
- They don’t test on animals.
- Vanicream does not sell its products in China.
- They discourage (but do not stop) third parties/suppliers to conduct animal testing on their products.
The parent company of Vanicream is Pharmaceutical Specialties Inc. which is often not considered a cruelty-free company.
Also, Vanicream is not certified as a cruelty-free brand.
Vanicream does not openly and clearly explain its policy regarding animal testing so;
Vanicream is in the grey area i.e. it is not completely certain whether they are cruelty-free or not.
